Alex’s Legal Internship Experience with BH Support
Alex Jeffrey- Family Law Legal Administrator
When I began my search for where I wanted to complete my placement year, I had an extensive list of options. However, when I read the company values of BH Support it was an easy decision. I wanted to gain experience, build my confidence when working with others, and leave my placement year satisfied, knowing I had helped people. BH Support is perfect for this, as a Community Interest Company, BH Support puts people first and money second.
Since starting at BH Support, I have found a particular interest for the financial side of Separation and Divorce. Discovering my specific interest early into my placement allowed me to develop my skills in that area quickly.
I recently began working on Child Arrangement cases, both cases have ended up taking an unexpected turn, this was such a crucial development stage for me as I was able to prove to myself and display to my colleagues that I can provide assistance throughout the entirety of the work BH Support provides.
I have worked alongside clients since my first day at BH Support. I soon learnt that my colleagues trusted me, and the harder I worked, the more organised I became, and by actively taking initiative, I grew to be more involved within the Company. This hard work soon paid off when I was chosen by the company’s Director, Peter Guest, to attend Court for a client’s final hearing. This gave me my first glimpse of the Family Court at Bournemouth and Poole.
By working with BH Support, I have had the opportunity to meet many successful people who work throughout the Dorset area. Through my Director, I have spoken with the Head of Business Development at Barclays Bank, a tech developer with a degree in psychology who is able to create technology for those in need of psychological support, as well as members of an LGBTQ+ Charity with the intention of creating unity between the Family Law sector and the LGBTQ+ Community.
I am now awaiting my next Court visit where I will be providing support by way of a McKenzie Friend for my client. It is expected this hearing will take place at Oxford Magistrates Court in front of a Legal Administrator as well as three Magistrates. This opportunity pushes me into uncertain and exciting waters that I may not experience if I hadn’t chosen to do my placement at BH Support.
I am so proud of the achievements I have accomplished in my first five months with BH Support, and I am so grateful to have such a supportive team behind me, I couldn’t be more pleased to be working with BH Support.
